Ferial I. Haque Ph.D. is a retired scientist that emigrated to Ottawa, Canada, in July 1972, having survived the liberation movement of Bangladesh. Ferial’s story is a captivating one, as she was able to go against all the odds to become a success in her career path. In her new book titled “My Chosen Words: Memories of a Professional Immigrant Woman,” Ferial gives readers an insider look into her life and how she persisted in rising above poverty, hunger, and isolation as a professional immigrant woman, as she welcomes new Canadians from many corners of the world.

Studies have revealed that immigrants do not find it particularly easy, making it outside their home country. The case was not particularly different for Ferial Imam Haque Ph.D., arriving in Canada in 1972 with sad memories and the several challenges faced by an average emigrant. However, she can be rightly described as a product of persistence and hard work, rising above several obstacles to reach her full potential. In the recently published book, Ferial documents a powerful, emotional, and astonishing story to motivate other immigrants and young women that are pursuing higher studies and research in science.

The book also details how Ferial’s conviction and devotion to research enabled her to contribute to the scientific world, narrating how she overcame adversity to emerge from a dead-end and find creative ways to develop her identity as a Canadian and secure a place in the global society as she juggled her role as a wife, mother, and graduate student in the early sixties in Canada.
