covid19

ALONE WITH COVID 19

Thank you all who have encouraged me with their creative vision to depict the dreams in my teen years. I was born so far away from my adopted home in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. A dream I have created against all odds in my adopted country in the city of Ottawa, the nation’s capital… My dreams were nurtured by the words of many creative and great minds in many cities in many countries over half a century…

I am daring to embark on narrating my vision of survival today hearing the news of the microscopic invisible ‘Coronavirus’ attacking the global community in March 2020. The World Health Organization declared COVID 19 Pandemic in March 2020. The media has been busy updating the power of this virus and how it can attack human beings. I, like everyone else am frightened to learn the consequence if I become the victim.

It took a few days to regain my rational thinking about the Pandemic news… Soon, I realized the consequence of the attack. I did not want to die yet! I thought about how I survived the war and am still alive. I am comfortable with the tools I have collected during my escape from the battlefield in 1971 in Dacca, Eat Pakistan. I, along with my daughter took refuge in my great-great maternal grandfather’s house, in Dacca to hide and be alive today.

I am so grateful to be where I am today. There is no stress and suspense to go to work in the morning in my senior days… The invisible microorganism has defined my work- station next to my bedroom, living and dining rooms beside the kitchen… The time difference I have tuned to three different countries in the world: Dacca, the capital of East Pakistan – I enjoy the comfort of growing up in a peaceful city. On the contrary, the word – Bangladesh depicts the dark memories of death.

I am exploring many ways to eradicate the fear of death by the attack of Coronavirus… Thinking of special food with nutritional values, cleanliness washing hands many times a day, dusting and wiping the places within the living space around the house, I try to take preventive measures while shopping wearing gloves and covering my face…

I thank science for creating technology to bring the global community together… Thanks to the internet, e-mail, ZOOM, Skype, Social media and the telephone to stay connected globally.

The researchers are searching for medication to treat the patients in the hospitals, finding preventive ways to stay safe with gloves, especial uniforms, masks, washing hands, sanitization and maintaining social distancing.

Looking out my living room window – I see the streets are like ghost towns. No dog walkers, people are not walking, children are cycling and the cars are parked on the streets.

It seemed spooky and I remembered P.D. James’ book The Children of Men. In this book, she narrates a story of a world with no children and no future. She writes the human race has become infertile, and the last generation to be born is now an adult. Civilization itself is crumbling as suicide and despair became a commonplace. I feel the same way the human race may become infertile due to fear, stress, and social distancing.

Children of Men is a 2006 dystopian action thriller film directed and co-written by Alfonso Cuarón. The film was released on 22 September 2006 in the UK and on 25 December in the US. Although at the box office it did not make money but won many awards…

While searching for the word epidemic I discovered history has records of other epidemics 1918, Spanish Flu, Black Plague, Recent past HIV, Ebola.

The COVID 19 is a type Flu virus which may become seasonal and can be prevented by a new vaccine. WHO has identified that the most vulnerable groups will be the seniors, patients under treatment for other illnesses, and in the long term care homes.

Once the Coronavirus is under control, I am hoping for a compassionate and kind beginning of a global lifestyle. To dream of a world where we can live in good health and harmony forever after…
